Hinsbergers

These two photos were also in Ida's Album.  I was curious, and Larry found who they were! The man's a marvel:        Adeline Cecile Gaul, born Sep 29, 1900 in Bancroft, Kossuth, IA; died Aug 27, 1981 in Garden Grove, Orange, CA. She married Leo Andrew Hinsberger Jun 25, 1927 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA; born Jun 26, 1899 in Armstrong, Emmet, IA; died Feb 21, 1979 in Orange, Orange, CA.

Added much later:
A stray photo that was actually identified on the back--wow!

Thru the miracle that is the internet, here's the photo Don talked about in a comment below--if you're related, you should know these folks... from Don Hinsberger's FB page: "Joe St. Hilaire sent me this photo from July 1976 at his Uncle Leo and Aunt Adeline's."  Cool, huh?
September 2016--We've had a few terrific Hinsberger family comments since we posted the first four pics in 2010--don't miss em.  Ida & Walberga would be tickled, I think ☺

  1. Such a great find of the Hinsbergers! The top set of photos are my

grandparents on my father's side. The kids are all Uncles and one Aunt

(the other, was not yet born and is referred to in the postcard). The

children are: Maryanne (in Grandma's arms) She has many kids and grand

and great grandkids now. She lives in Anaheim, CA). At the bottom is my

Uncle John; he now lives in Texas. At the outside left is my father,

Harold Hinsberger. Dad just retired (at 85!) and just moved to Burley,

Idaho. In the center is my Uncle Vincent. He lives in Garden Grove, CA

in the last home of my grandparents. At the top is the oldest boy, my

Uncle Donald. He lives in Dana Point. Not in the photo is my Aunt--

Sister Eileen. She is semi-retired and is in LA now, having dedicated her

life and work as a Carmelite nun.

I am also very familiar with the name St. Hilaire, compliments of my

Aunt Maryanne who is well versed in the family history. I've heard her

    speak of them many times.

    Sincerely,

    Paul Hinsberger

    1. Hi, Paul--we were hoping that someday, someone would recognize the photos. Your grandmother Adeline must have been a friend of my mom's half-cousins Ida and Walburga Naber in Bancroft, Iowa. I inherited Ida's photo album, and most of the pics were not identified. I'm thrilled we were able to connect with you!

  2. Great! Send the URL to my father, Harold. Sure it will get passed around to the "kids". Sure you will have a few more connections coming your way. Wonderful to connect with you too Marlys!

  3. Hello, I am Don Hinsberger, Paul's cousin and son of Leo and Adeline's oldest child Donald. Earlier this summer four relatives from the St. Hilaire family came down from Washington and I was lucky to get invited to Marianne's house in Anaheim. We had a nice visit and I've been emailing back and forth with Joe St. Hilaire. He and three other siblings were not born at the time of this photo. I mentioned that I remember my grandmother talking about Winnifred quite a bit. And he sent back the "13 cousins" photo along with these comments:

"Our family has remained close to yours all these years thanks to your grandma and grandpa, who made the effort to take that big trip up here every two or three years. Aunt Adeline and my mother were very close to each other from their childhood, with Adeline being only 5 years older than her niece Winnifred, so that was always a big draw. Secondly, Leo had sisters in Leavenworth, Wash., and he enjoyed visiting them on those trips. Thirdly, your dad (Donald) and Harold, Vincent, Johnny, Marianne, and Eileen matched up pretty well with my elder siblings:

    Hinsbergers St.Hilaires
    Donald 1928
    Harold 1929 Catherine 1929
    Vincent 1931 George 1931
    John 1932 Dick 1932
    Marianne 1935 John 1935
    Eileen 1937 Mary 1937 (followed by Ruth 1939, Judie 1941, Joe 1943, Tom 1944, Winifred 1946)

...and we always had great fun when they came for those visits. A lot of great memories of those visits. Your grandparents' last visit was in 1978 on the occasion of my parents' 50th anniversary."

  5. Sorry. The names didn't stay in the proper columns. I'll try it this way.

    Hinsbergers:
    Donald 1928 Harold 1929 Vincent 1931 John 1932 Marianne 1935 Eileen 1937

    St. Hilaires:
    Catherine 1929 George 1931 Dick 1932 John 1935 Mary 1937
    (followed by Ruth 1939, Judie 1941, Joe 1943, Tom 1944, Winifred 1946)

Joe also sent this description of the photo with everyone named. :-)

"As you can see in the picture taken on the front lawn of our Wide Hollow (Yakima, WA) house, the cousins were lined up in order of height: Catherine, holding baby Judie, Donald, Harold, Vincent, George, Dick, Johnny H., Marianne, John S., Eileen, Mary, Ruthie--and a chicken in the background. This had to be summer of '41. How many of you oldsters remember this?"

  6. If I knew how I would add a photo taken in Leo and Adeline's house in 1976 with two of their siblings, all of Don's, Marianne's and Joe St. Hilaire's spouses and children with three cousins thrown in for good measure. Tell me how to do it and I'll be happy to share it here. I hope it's OK to post a FaceBook link. I apologize if it's not. https://www.facebook.com/don.hinsberger/posts/1241461805885164?comment_id=1242306765800668&ref=notif&notif_t=feed_comment&notif_id=1473990959466525

  7. It's great sadness that I must tell you of the passing of two of my uncles. The youngest of the four brothers John died in his home in Texas on September 3rd. Just 25 days later on September 28th the 3rd boy Vincent passed away in his house in which my grandparents formerly lived. That is the same house we took the photo in way back in 1976. My Father Donald the oldest son and Paul's dad Harold are assisting in affairs of his estate along with their two younger sisters Marianne and Eileen.

  8. We had all forgotten I think that since Vince was living in their house at the time of their deaths that we never cleaned out my grandparents belongings and have opened up a treasure trove of old photos and paperwork. It has sparked in myself a sudden interest in our family tree. I found some pages that were printed out by Harold some time ago that had the family tree of Leo and Adeline. As I flipped through it I was surprised to see Verna my mother's photo and eulogy from the newspaper. They may be linked with this site but I don't know where to look. If anyone can help me get started before I do a bunch of work that is already done or worse yet, do something that I'll have to redo later can you suggest which software to use and how I should proceed?
